There's also a 'dual wield' mode where you can control both simultaneously, which is kind of its own mind-bending coordination challenge. We have a 'hot swap' mode where you can switch back and forth between Jeff and Debra, which is how we typically play when playtesting alone. Players can experience the whole game even by passing the baseline Apprentice score on each level, but if you're hoping to achieve Postmaster rank for some extra rewards, you'll need to beat the set time threshold by mastering your dash ability, familiarising yourself with the environment of every stage, and co-ordinating with your partner to ensure that not a single second is wasted. It’s really hard to have a one-size-fits-all difficulty, so our goal was to let players pursue the challenge level they want."ĭavis points to KeyWe's ranked scoring system as an example of that balance. At the same time, we still wanted KeyWe to feel fast-paced and energetic, and to offer a solid challenge for players who wanted it.

Include grandiose stages and more modes, potentially adding more player options to make it a family-friendly experience. In fact, I hope the game embraces this identity and pushes forward with it. This is not to their detriment, as I believe KeyWe shines as a fun and casual experience. Instead of one big game, KeyWe feels like a series of minigames to enjoy with someone else. The concept of KeyWe is quite sweet, but it doesn’t feel whole. Despite this collection of methods to keep you entertained, the game still feels short-lived. Along the way, you may also get obstacles thrown at you, such as vines blocking certain buttons or distractions from hungry animals. Instead of being asked to do the same tasks repeatedly, you get to try out different objectives and mechanics. There is an acceptable amount of level variety. I’d recommend playing KeyWe with a friend, partner or family member. Trying this mode felt really dull as it lacks the excitement that comes with sharing a challenge with someone. Rather than two players each controlling their own bird, you would just control both, either simultaneously or by constantly switching between them. However, this mode is vastly less enjoyable.
While this game is meant for co-op, it does have an option for single-player. Getting the max amount of stamps is challenging but attainable, incentivizing you to retry certain levels. Communication is key, as you must work with your partner strategically to reap the most rewards from each level. However, you quickly realize that completing these tasks in a set amount of time is tougher than it looks. The tutorials for the levels seem quite easy.

With these stamps, you can purchase customization options to stylize your bird, ranging from accessories to clothes to skin layouts. The faster you finish, the more stamps you both are awarded. You and your partner are trying to accomplish your objective in getting the mail out before the timer expires.
